In a recent CNN Presidential Debate (2024), Donald Trump made some crazy remarks about "black jobs," and has sparked a world wide web discussion about racial equality and representation in the workplace. Child, Trump clearly still sees us as the help. Somebody get this man some water because he is too thirsty.
Trump's negative comments sent social media into a frenzy. He suggested black people's hard earned work and leadership roles in various sectors, including Entertainment and Performing Arts are simply null and void.
Since this blog is also relating to my life as a Creative Director, I'll love to introduce Mr. Trump to a few Black Jobs, AKA Box Office Heavy Hitters since he seems to think we all just are "refueling oil tanks and exiting out of the colored back doors" Check this list below.
Black Leadership in Entertainment and Performing Arts
Contrary to the implications of Trump's rigorous comments last night, black people have made significant strides in achieving leadership roles across various industries, particularly in Entertainment and Arts. What exactly kept everyone sane during the pandemic--ENTERTAINMENT. What would the world be without Black Entertainment? As the Entertainment and Performing Arts sectors showcase a rich diversity of talent and leadership, with many Black professionals serving as Founders, Presidents, CEOs, Directors, and more, the "black job" racial slur set us all on fire last night. If you are a bit confused as to why Trump's statement was baffling or just in need of a reminder, here are just few notable examples:
1. Shonda Rhimes - Founder and CEO of Shondaland
2. Oprah Winfrey - CEO of Harpo Productions and OWN
3. Ava DuVernay - Founder of ARRAY
4. Tyler Perry - Founder of Tyler Perry Studios
5. Issa Rae – Founder of Issa Rae Productions
6. Ryan Coogler– Co-Founder of Proximity Media, Director, Producer, and Screenwriter
7.Lena Waithe – Founder of Hillman Grad Productions
8.Spike Lee – Founder of 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, Director, Producer, Writer, and Actor
9.Kerry Washington - Co-Founder of Simpson Street, a production company
10. Kenny Leon- American Director, Producer, and Actor
By focusing on the successes and leadership of Black people in general especially those in Entertainment and Performing Arts, we can challenge outdated perceptions like that of Donald Trump and work towards a more inclusive and equitable future. Next time, just cut the mic off. God bless this election...
